The flame coloration of flame cells is due to abundant cytoplasmic immunoglobulin, resulting from excess synthesis and accumulation of immunoglobulins within the rough endoplasmic reticulum. This feature is most commonly associated with IgA-secreting plasma cells.
Conditions associated with flame cells include plasma cell dyscrasias such as multiple myeloma (especially IgA myeloma) and plasma cell leukemia, as well as reactive conditions including chronic inflammatory states, chronic infections, and immune stimulation.
